She will test for each section star during the advanced belt tests held at our dojo. (Each star gets sewn on the lapel of her gi after it is awarded). Once she has all three stars, she starts screenings for black belt, second degree, which, again, like black belt first degree, is a city wide test., held quarterly. Once she earns that, her uniform will change, and she'll have a red uniform with yellow piping and a black belt with two bars on it. Generally, the process to get awarded a black belt, second degree, takes two years after black belt, first degree is awarded. Then it's three years to get black belt, third degree (red gi with black piping), four years to get fourth degree (black uniform with yellow piping), etc.

I think that the designation of "master instructor" comes with the fourth degree rank.
