My friends and I (college students with no eye toward getting married or having children anytime soon) discussed this idea once. One guy said that he thought a bottle of wine would be a nice thing to buy for a baby, to drink when they turned 21, instead of a conventional savings bond. The group was split on this being a great gift idea, or an entirely inappropriate one. Thoughts?
