Gladiator the movie I didn't much care for, but the soundtrack is actually quite beautiful -- and instead of pulling the John Williams Pretending He's Written Something Better Than Holst trick, they just went ahead and used Holst! I liked that very much about it, and the final set of tracks has this haunting vocal line that lingers long after the music stops. Even if you avoid the movie, the music is worth a hear.

I liked Gladiator a lot; however, I was raised on the spectacles of Ben-Hur and such, and have always had a weakness for historical extravaganzas. But Gladiator had me from the opening scene right through to the end (which I watched through tears). There wasn't a moment in it when I felt like I could look away from the screen; I loved Russell Crowe's performance; Joaquin Phoenix was superbly slimy. And he may have been not the greatest human being, but I adored Oliver Reed as an actor, and he played his last role in Gladiator. This is really one of my favorite movies.

I love it too. It found every one of my buttons and pushed them hard, and no matter how big an ass Russell Crowe may be in public, I love him as an actor.
