Another possible Flint

Here's a darn good question that [livejournal.com profile] choralgirl asked me about book 7, harking back to something that happened in the Chamber of Secrets in book 2:

If basilisk venom kills horcruxes, why didn't the venom from the basilisk fang that grazed Harry in book 2 kill the horcrux of Voldemort's soul that was in his scar? Was it just that the Phoenix tears that healed Harry neutralized the venom before it had the chance to kill the horcrux?

What I'm wondering is what the Chamber of Secrets *smelled* like after five years of being locked up with a rotting basilisk corpse in it. Can you imagine?

I just assumed that the Horcrux didn't die from Harry's brush with the basilisk venom because it didn't kill him enough.
