Entertainment Weekly's list of 14 great movies about writers

Here it is. I can't believe they left off The Shining, Moulin Rouge, Bullets Over Broadway and most of all, my all time favorite, Romancing the Stone:

"Joan Wilder? THE Joan Wilder?! I read your books! I read all your books!!!"

What movies would you add to the list?

American Dreamer, Capote, arguably Wilde, definitely Bullets over Broadway, and if the term stretches to include 8 1/2, Shadow of the Vampire.

Left off The Whole Wide World and Misery too...

They specifically said 'screenwriters', which may explain some of the omissions.

8 1/2 is one of the 14 movies listed.

Stranger than Fiction is another good candidate.

Finding Forrester would be on my list.

*gasp* No Moulin Rouge??? How sad. :(

I would have voted for that one, too.

I've only seen two of them.

Isn't it odd that two of the 14 star Nicolas Cage? (I liked him in Adaptation; haven't seen LLV.)

Hmm... perhaps stretching "screenwriters" to include people who might have been affected by the WGA strike...

The Princess Bride (sort of)
The Producers
My Favorite Year (though that was one of them, I think)
The Daffy Duck Cartoon where he turns into weird creatures...
The Player
Galaxy Quest (sort of)
and a few more that I can't put my finger on. Screenwiters like to write what they know...

It's not about a screenwriter, but if it were just about writers, I'd include Shakespeare In Love. :D

Shakespeare in Love! Not exactly a screenwriter, but definitely a precursor to them. :)

[identity profile] rysmiel.livejournal.com 2008-02-14 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
I know.

I was saying that if the definition of "writer" is elastic enough to cover 8 1/2, then I think it would also be legitimate to include Shadow of the Vampire, which is also about a director.

I agree with Shakespeare in Love and that other pre-screenwriter - playwright movie: Quills. Oh, and in that case Wilde.

Rosalind Russell as Hildy in His Girl Friday, no question. I love that movie.

Seconded! I can't believe I didn't think of that one!
