Delia the creative dervish

omigosh

Remember I told you that Delia needed to be entertained and asked you for ideas?

So far this summer, she has made:

A denim skirt, sewn with the assistance and guidance of [livejournal.com profile] dlandon. A matching jacket will be made on a future get together

Ten necklaces and "about a billion pairs of earrings" (and she helped me design a necklace and pair of earrings for me to wear)

Knitted bookmarks (several of them), tiny Gryffindor scarves from the book Charmed Knits: Projects for Fans of Harry Potter, using yarn that [livejournal.com profile] aome sent her

Started a knitted blanket

Started a cross stitch project from a package sent by [livejournal.com profile] haniaw (Thanks, we got the box!)

Made several soulcollage cards

Taken jewelry-making lessons

Taken a cake-decorating course

Cooked several dinners

Practiced crocheting (no specific project yet)

Started making a quilt ("although I'm probably never going to finish it")

She has bullied Rob into driving her to Michaels, Arc (where she can get secondhand craft supplies) and JoAnne Fabrics repeatedly in the last several weeks. "She's relentless" says Rob with a touch of consternation. "I never need to set my alarm in the morning because Delia's always waking me up and ordering me to take her somewhere to get craft supplies."

Have you guys considered setting her up with an Etsy shop? Help with business skills as well as crafty ones. :)

I have that sock yarn all wrapped up, can you resend me your PO box? rainwood at gmail dot com

things have been a little chaotic here, but I did mean to get that out!

[identity profile] dichroic.livejournal.com 2008-07-23 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
I was going to suggest socks. Smaller time / material committment than a sweater, easy to carry around, can be as intricate as your skills allow. Also, good presents for one's family in cold winters :-)

Good for her! It's so encouraging to hear about a young person who is so into active creativity, instead of watching TV and playing video games all the time! She might even be able to make a career of crafting!

I want a scarf bookmark! I was never sure if I'd be a Gryffindor or a Ravenclaw though. Maybe I need one of each.

I would buy them from her too!

(Tried to learn to knit, once. It was not pretty.)

Holy cow! If she puts half that much energy into everything else, she'll conquer the world before she's twenty.

[identity profile] sundancekid.livejournal.com 2008-07-23 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
If she's interested in trying something else, I've started several key racks along these lines (http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5281805&section_id=5166508) using scrap wood from my parents' garage (they're done other than screwing the hooks in -- two are decoupaged [wrapping paper, old map] and one is painted). It's easy, fun, and useful.

her energy scares me. Seriously. Scares me :) I was ready to call it a day after sewing on Sunday and I have a feeling if I'd said "let's start the jacket"...she'd have taken me up on it :) Will you email you another bat-time, same bat-cave.

Peg, I have a big old box of quilting fabric (small squares, in various patterns and colors) that I don't need. Could Delia use it?

[identity profile] pegkerr.livejournal.com 2008-07-23 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)
She would love that! Thank you--but don't send a box so big that it'll cost you an arm and a leg to ship it ( or that would be a hassle for me to store)

[identity profile] madlori.livejournal.com 2008-07-23 03:05 pm (UTC)(link)
It would be a box about the size of a standard book-shipping box, of the kind they'd give you at Borders if you asked for boxes. Does that make sense?

[identity profile] pegkerr.livejournal.com 2008-07-23 04:13 pm (UTC)(link)
That would be fine--thanks!

[identity profile] haniaw.livejournal.com 2008-07-23 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
I'm delighted that my supplies have found a good home!

[identity profile] silme.livejournal.com 2008-07-23 07:52 am (UTC)(link)
Wow! I'm impressed.

And I'm echoing the idea of an Etsy shop. :)

Such a busy little Martha Stewart!

[identity profile] irinaauthor.livejournal.com 2008-07-23 01:56 pm (UTC)(link)
When does she sleep? Her room must be absolutely packed with all the stuff she's making.

[identity profile] tinymich.livejournal.com 2008-07-23 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow! Go Delia! I miss having that much energy *and* time :-)

[identity profile] mlion.livejournal.com 2008-07-23 04:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Aaaand - there's a package going out to you/her in the mail today, once I find a couple of things. :)

[identity profile] pegkerr.livejournal.com 2008-07-26 01:16 pm (UTC)(link)
We received the box, and Delia is really excited with the contents. Thank you!

[identity profile] mlion.livejournal.com 2008-07-29 06:38 am (UTC)(link)
 Glad it arrived safely, and I hope she has fun!

[identity profile] skylarker.livejournal.com 2008-07-23 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
She reminds me of someone...
Oh, yeah: me at that age. :)

After reading this to [livejournal.com profile] iraunink, she commented, "Delia is [livejournal.com profile] kosmickitten". Yes, I agree, she's sounding similarly ambitious.

Yarn and stuff for Delia

[identity profile] bohemianspirit.livejournal.com 2008-07-25 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
That girl is amazing. I second the idea of helping her set up an Etsy shop. Her stuff can't possibly be any worse than some of what I've seen on there, and from the pictures I recall you posting, it's actually quite good and she could probably make a few sales!

Speaking of Delia, I have quite a few bags of stuff to pass on to her, if she wants it. Yarn, including some red and green and white for Christmas crafting. Beads, mostly plastic crafty type in various shapes and colors. Several (gawd, I started typing "Severus" instead of "Several"... habit) storage boxes, including some "celestial" photo-box sized boxes that are a bit worn but still in good shape and useful. A couple of scarves and stuff that might just be fun for her. And, if you or she can use any of it, some miscellaneous seasonal decorations and stuff. Whatever you can't use will go to Steeple People, so no fears that I'm just trying to shove all my clutter on you and her. ;-) But I wanted to give her first pickings, as it were.

Do you want to get together Sunday afternoon (day after tomorrow)? We could meet for tea at Tillie's bean or where ever you like (I can drive, if that would help). We could go over soul collage cards and then we could see the stuff you have and decide whether we'd like to have it? Say about 1:00 p.m.?

Peg

Sunday at 1 p.m. works for me! I'm open as to where we go. There's a nice place by me called Common Roots Cafe (Lyndale Ave. at 26th St.) but I also like Tillie's Bean a lot, and have several coupons to pass on to you for TB as well. I have too much stuff to bring on the bus, so if you are willing to pick me up, that will definitely help. I'll e-mail you with my address. Looking forward to getting together!
