Fiona passed her section test

Fiona passed her second section test (three are needed before she starts screening for second degree):

Fiona's Advanced belt exam January 30, 2010 (section star)

Come and see the awesomeness! Pictures and videos below the cuts.

Marching basics:

Multiple round kicks: The girl in white is testing for a black stripe belt and so does 10 kicks. Fiona (in blue), a First Degree black belt, does 15, and the man in red, who is a Second Degree black belt (also testing for a section star), does 20 round kicks.

Kick combination: Hook kick, low/high round kick, side kick:

Spin hook kicks:

Multiple Tornado kicks (10 in a row):

Jump scissor kick:

Then they started doing form. Mr. Seymour surprised everyone by having the black belts go through all the forms they've learned since they were white belts. Here's a picture from the purple belt form (sounds like Shin Jin Yung; not sure of the spelling):

Fiona did one of the three First Degree Black belt forms, the one for the bo, Souichi No Kang. It, um, didn't go very well. Perhaps she was thrown a bit by unexpectedly having to do five other lower belt forms first. She actually hit her head with the bo at one point, and one hand actually let go of the bo at one point, which you're not supposed to do. She had to stop and back up at one point because she was too close to the mirrors. And there's a hesitation part way through where she had to remember the next section.

Mr. Seymour kindly told her that when he was testing for one of his black belt section stars, he hit himself in the head with his own bo and it bled for two days. "So don't feel too bad." It's a pity, because she was so strong on the kicking section, and I know she's worked hard on this form, and I've seen her do it perfectly during practice. At the same time, she's also been working on mastering a Fourth degree bo form for an upcoming tournament, so perhaps that might be another reason why she looked a little uncertain partway through.

Self Defense demonstration: First Degree black belts are required to take their opponents down to the ground and "contain them," meaning, pinning them so they can't get back up.

Here she does it again. This time, you can hear the distinct 'crack' in the guy's wrist bones:

Next was pad strikes, where the object is to absolutely exhaust the candidates:

The test lasted an hour and a half. She passed everything, in the end:

Then she came home and she conked out, falling asleep right in her Daddy's arms:

Section tests are hard.
