Well, it's unabashedly non-Western in its mannerisms and symbols, and I love figuring out alien languages. It's a story I don't know, but which rings bells with the audience. You can hear them.
It's about the Duke of Ch'in, who is such a great character in _Bridge of Birds_. Of course this is a hugely different view of him, but I also love non-traditional views of fairy tales.
It's got the martial-arts sense of magic. (Which, coincidentally, I also learned from Barry Hughart: _The Story of the Stone_ allowed me to make sense of the moves in _CTHD_ and _Hero_.) Every move makes deep-muscle sense.
It does not apologize for showing the attainment of the impossible.
It has clever layers of stories and lies, but not so clever that I got lost.
