Anyone read Gaston LeRoux's Phantom of the Opera? Could you recommend a translation, or is it worth trying to track down Leonard Wolf's annotated edition?
I like this (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0743498364/qid=1109197311/sr=8-8/ref=pd_ka_1/104-0292876-5755971?v=glance&s=books&n=507846) version, as it has lots of interesting footnotes and things in itty-bitty writing that is interesting. Even though one doesn't have to know most of what's there, it's cool if you find that sort of thing interesting :D It also points out interesting inconsitencies (age differences for example).

So, in short, I enjoyed it. I bought it for my second read, and I think it is definitly worth it. Also, pretty cover and creepy photos form the movies :D
Also, i found mine at Barnes and Noble, they had about 4 copies of this version, so I'd check there (unless you have already, in which case, ignore me) :D
oh man, i read a penguin edition AGES ago and the book got ruined in construction. i don't usually get crazy about translations, since it only makes me want to read it in the original language. :)
The annotations aren't all that helpful, at least to my daughter or me; there are cites for every Greek god or obscure opera composer mentioned, but not much social history.
Can't remember the actual publisher, but the icon was a stylised running guy holding (I think) a torch. It was introduced by Anne Perry, and the prose flowed beautifully.
Same here. Except my copy didn't get ruined. That doesn't mean I can tell you where it is, but it was definitely a Penguin edition.
So I then got a copy in French, and am praying that someday I'll get around to reading it. With all my other books in French that I haven't touched in years.
well, i don't know any french, so... makes it a little more difficult. really what i meant to say was that it makes me want to learn the language so that i can read the book in the language the author intended it to be read. :)
I second that; I also have another translation which is less good wand which I would disrecommend, save that it was sufficiently less good it's still in Ireland. [ When packing to move across the Atlantic, two translations of The Phantom of the Opera were oddly enough not at the top of my list of priorities. ]
