Books for July, 2005

Rewards and Fairies by Rudyard Kipling. First time read. A series of short stories, set off by poems, this is actually a sequel to another work I haven't read yet, Puck of Pook's Hill. I found this pleasurable, but I'll admit that not much has stuck with me on it.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K. Rowling. First time read. My reaction recorded at length here (spoilers).

Fudoki by Kij Johnson ([livejournal.com profile] kijjohnson). Re-read. Reaction on this time through. Um, fervent jealousy.

The Facts of Life, by Graham Joyce (lent to me by [livejournal.com profile] kiramartin). First time read. Interesting. I liked the ghosts. This won the 2003 World Fantasy Award, I believe.

The Bastard's Tale by Margaret Frazier. First time read.

The Hunter's Tale by Margaret Frazier. First time read. These two are part of the Dame Frevisse mystery series, and I will continue to buy and read any that come out. Alas, I wonder if there will be many more. I hear that her cancer has come back for the third time.

Oh no! I had no idea! I love the Dame Frevisse stories. I hope she will be all right!

Cornelia Funke, INKSPELL

Dear Peg,
I thought you'd like to know that the sequel to Cornelia Funke's INKHEART, called INKSPELL will be out in late September or early October. The German premiere will be on September 15th. I already have tickets for a reading that Funke will have on September 19th in the Lichtburg Theater in Essen, Germany in front of 1200 people! And on December 26th, I will have the chance to see the stage play that was adapted from INKHEART by the State Theater of Hannover, Germany. I am very much looking forward to that. And the good news is that Funke is already working on a third and concluding book in the series. Her worktitle is INKDEATH, but she has said that her publishers do not like that title much, so it might change before publication. One other note, the unabridged audio book of INKSPELL is read by Hollywood actor Brendan Fraser, who has previously performed Funke's DRAGON RIDER. And it is said that he is doing a marvelous job. He is also Funke's favourite for playing Mo in the upcoming INKHEART movie from New Line Cinema. Best, Olaf Keith
