Window-shop the art fairs! You could search out the ugliest, most bizarre, or most impractical art item at each fair, so you'd be homing in on items that wouldn't make you feel bad for not being able to buy them. (And with all due respect to the art fairs, there is always some strikingly bizarre, ugly, and impractical stuff.)
Sounds a bit like my problem a week or so ago. I am curious to know how you ended up spending your day. Oh, and I found that once I stopped fighting my bordeom so much, I began to enjoy having time alone with myself. I mean real chunks of time with total quiet and total freedom. I can hear my own thoughts so much more clearly now. (Not all of them pleasant, and that's uncomfortable, but important to know.) While your girls are away and your husband is working, you should take advantage of the rare time you have for you!
Okay, when you make a post like that, are you looking for suggestions? Not actively seeking suggestions, but not minding if you get some? Just expressing your situation? Any combination of the above?
I always wonder, not just about you. Everyone's different.
I see a post like that, and half of me wants to say, "Wow, I know the 'I don't want to go to Karate' thing. For me, I ended up realizing that if I didn't know if I wanted to go or not, or I /felt/ like skipping, I should go; if I shouldn't go, I would *know* I shouldn't go." And, "Make a list of all the things you can't get enough time to yourself to do when you /do/ have the girls around, and cultivate a sense of delicious, illicit enjoyment while you do them!" Or, "Something visual art-y? Or music-y? I know that's what I'm needing right now, anyhow."
And half of me wants to say, "Yeah, it must be weird to have the house so empty. Is there pleasure mixed up in the missing of the girls, or is it all just missing them? Anyhow, I hope you find something lovely to do with your gorgeous day." And leave it at that.
I've got the fix-it bug, same as anyone else, but I have /slowly/ been learning to make it shut up, sometimes. So, I'm curious. Some people post about a quandry in order to get advice, some people are actively irritated by advice...there's a whole range.
Also, I'm nosey. Some people do not like being asked things like this in their journal. But I'm writing this hours and hours after you posted, so you might very well simply not have seen it, and thus, quite understandably never respond at all.
I finally reasoned that since I am very very diligent about going to karate every single week, it was all right for me to skip it this time: since I miss it so rarely, it was a real illicit pleasure.

I am/was open to suggestions, and in fact took one:
