Has anyone heard

from [livejournal.com profile] dreamflower02? She lives in Gulfport, Mississippi, and I understand that they have been swamped.

It may be a while yet Peg. I managed to get through to family in Mobile, but most of the cell towers were overloaded. And there's no power down there either. So a bunch of the cell phones were dead this morning when I tried to check on my cat.

I've still heard nothing out of Metarie and Kenner from my friends. But I spotted my friend Dawn's house on TV, surrounded by water. I hope she went to Baton Rouge and didn't stay to work at the hospital.

Patrick and Teresa Nielsen Hayden have collected links re: the hurricane. I understand they will also be linking to "check in" sites: http://nielsenhayden.com/makinglight/archives/006675.html

It's not unusual for it to take a while to get through to people after a hurricane, the cell towers are being overloaded while many people's home lines are down, and power could be out for over a week. Plus the roads have to be cleared, so even if one part of town gets power, others may not know it or be able to go use it.

It's not a solution (re: today's post), but I wish I lived nearer. I've always loved school-supply shopping and have no one to buy for (yet). I'd gleefully go shopping for someone else's kid(s), just to have reason to finger fresh binders and pens and such again.
