Hurricane Housing

This site is awesome. A good counterpoint to all the despair in the news. 30,072 beds available for donation so far. I see that some of the housing offers are here in Minneapolis. I really wish that we could do this, but we have no spare rooms at all, and only one tiny bathroom for our entire family.

Wish I could figure out what else to do to help from so far away. Except, of course, donating money, which I am going to do.

I've got to figure out what money I can give, and go give it. And I need to send mail and make phone calls. And I need to remind people to give blood, since I can't do it myself.

And I need to follow up on getting myself volunteered with the Red Cross disaster services, which won't affect this disaster, but might put me where I can do some good in the next.

I don't have much money. I don't have room in my house to offer to other people. I can't donate blood. But I can speak up as a voter, and I have skills that people who have lived through disasters may need. So I can try to put myself where I can offer those.

And I can remind people, like you, who are sane and caring and broken up about this, to take care of themselves, because that's important too.

suggestion - you're a shiny, nifty author with a large fan base. Got any copies of Wild Swans around? Sign 'em and sell 'em with a markup to go to NOLA relief. Sell 'em here. I'd buy one. Seriously. Then donate the proceeds. Hanne Blank is doing that over in her LJ.

We donated a couch and an airmattress, offered housing for a small family, but we're in Los Angeles so I doubt anyone can or wants to come this far. But we will if someone has need.
