Text messaging

I have been configuring my My LJ page (very nifty feature) and am debating whether to enable the text messaging option on my account. Do you use it? How has your experience been? Am text messaging neophyte (heck, I am a technological dinosaur who has been mostly dependent on e-mail); do enlighten me. Worth it, or needless hassle? In what situations do you find it useful?

I use text messaging extensively with one close friend, and occasionally I'll send a text message to my husband's cell phone. He doesn't text, but it's a quick way to get a message to him when I expect he won't be able to talk on the phone. Reading a message on screen is VASTLY preferable (as far as I'm concerned) to dialing into a voice mail system.

I don't have any text messaging capability on my computer, but enjoy it on my cellphone. (Although the $0.50 per-message charge from/to Europe was a bit steep.)

I enabled text messaging: in theory, you can use LJ to send a text message to my mobile phone. Thus far, nobody seems interested--they'd rather email, which is fine with me.

I use text messaging with precisely one person--[livejournal.com profile] adrian_turtle prefers it to phone calls during the workday because text messages don't interrupt her when they arrive. So I use them for things like "I'm on the 3:00 bus".

Text messaging is an unexplored, alien landscape for me. It probably doesn't just have to do with cell phones, but my associations with it do, and since I don't have a cell phone (and if I did, would almost certainly use it for outgoing emergency calls almost exclusively) I have never actually learned about text messaging.

E-mail and LJ commenting are so fast and efficient, it seems hard for me to imagine needing another text medium for communication /except/ for one that could be used away from the computer. But I'd be quite unsurprised to learn that I'm All Wrong about this.

simply put: texting kept my affair alive. and ultimately was what busted me.
you don't need it. but it's fun.
