Yeah, latest fandom stuff

I've avoided commenting on the latest fandom kerfluffle, because I'm just really perplexed as to what to say. Besides, why the hell would anyone expect me to say anything?

Except yeah, plagiarism, not so good.
Friendships still stand.
Death threats, infinitely much worse. Not cool at all.

If you don't know what I'm talking about, fine. Believe me, you really don't need to know.

Sorry, I just can't say more than that.

I've avoided commenting on the latest fandom kerfluffle,

I had no idea there was a kerfluffle going on in fandom! I feel so left out. Apparently it has nothing to do with the local D.C. club.

The latest is that the death threats themselves may have been fictional.

Argh.

[identity profile] jonquil.livejournal.com 2006-08-17 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Oops. I was wrong.

There were death threats..

People often suck.

After skimming a thread or two related to the whole mess, I'm going to run-not-walk back to my happy ignorance.

Very wise.

There really isn't anything else to say at all. *sigh* You're right about that!

[identity profile] bookshop.livejournal.com 2006-08-17 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I'd say that pretty much sums it all up. ♥

The funny interesting thing is hearing about all of these brouhahas second-hand provides solid context for JKR's apparent desire to kill off her major characters lest she have to spend the rest of her natural life defending them from unlicensed foolishness.

Stuff like that is why I stepped away from that fandom.

[identity profile] roadnotes.livejournal.com 2006-08-17 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I go back and forth between a sort of appalled fascination, and unhappy bewilderment, though I seem to be leaning completely toward unhappy bewilderment.

[identity profile] papersky.livejournal.com 2006-08-17 06:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I can understand, emotionally, the urge to make death threats to someone who has plagiarised (not actually to kill them, or even hurt them, but to say something like "I wish I could wring your neck") much more easily than I can understand someone plagiarising and thinking it's all right.

I've never been much in favour of fan fiction, but all of this stuff has made me feel far more negative than before.

[identity profile] dd-b.livejournal.com 2006-08-17 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I like to think that "making death threats" is usually blowing off steam. Certainly if *I* ever intended to kill somebody I would keep *very very quiet* about it; I would want it to be a surprise. However, it's not an acceptable way of blowing off steam, beyond talking to close friends who know you're not serious. Publishing the blowing off of steam is Not Good.

This sort of hysterical emotional involvement seems to me prevalent, indeed it seems to me largely the *point* (at slightly lower levels of hysteria), of single-world fandoms, and is a major part of why I do not find them attractive.

[identity profile] lilisonna.livejournal.com 2006-08-18 02:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Really, you can find this sort of hysteria in any reasonable small social circle. I've encountered it in more places than you can possibly imagine including dog obedience circles, Unitarian Churches, Presbyterian churches, writer's groups, theaters (ohmygodthetheaterDRAMA) and other places too numerous to list.

Anything that folks feel passionate about will, ultimately, have Drama incidents.

[identity profile] juliansinger.livejournal.com 2006-08-17 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
That pretty much sums it up. Sigh.

[identity profile] nmalfoy.livejournal.com 2006-08-17 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, in this fandom, if you dare to speak out on something, you get dragged through the mud. Not cool, not fun, and not something I'm sure I'm wanting to stick around for any more.

[identity profile] lindelea1.livejournal.com 2006-08-17 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
So glad I missed this one. Don't even know what fandom. Firmly resolved to avoid all kerfuffles in the future, after the one and only that I contributed to.

I'm just baffled that people care so much. It's fanon, it's not like they're getting paid for it anyway. The way I see it, the only person who loses out is the author of the fanfic. The readers either don't know, or they recognize the quote and get a giggle out of it. The author of the original piece either doesn't suffer at all, or gets extra readers because of people realizing hte plagerism. The author of the fanfic at best learns to write by example, at worst never learns anything because they're plagerizing. Really, they're just harming themselves.

Of course all of this only counts because it's fanfiction. If we were talking original fiction I'd be much more upset about it.

For What It's Worth...

[identity profile] huladavid.livejournal.com 2006-08-18 01:50 pm (UTC)(link)
There was a bit of a kerfluffle over at one of the BBN fanfic sites, and my sole comment was that I found the whole plagiarism a little funny since we were "all playing with Anne Proulx's* Barbies".

Just 'cuz I think you need it, Gene Kelly is giving you flowers in my userpic.
