Attention, lurkers

Gacked mostly verbatim from [livejournal.com profile] nmalfoy: Lurkers out there, yo, today's your day. Whether you're a LJ-lurker or from someplace outside reading this journal, you are the reason this journal isn't locked by default. So, come out and say 'hi' or something. Tell me what you're doing here, how you feel, who you are, whatever. Today's the day to seize and be un-shy for once.

AND tell if you are a regular reader of this journal or just like to drop in when I'm being snarky or whatever. You can tell me what you like and what you don't like about it. It's okay; I'd like to know, and I have pretty thick skin. Well, usually.

Or just drop in to say hi... because it would be nice to know if there's more than the same 8 or 10 people that gets good use out of this journal, you know what I mean?

(And yeah, this means you, too, Mom. Leave a comment.)

I love your style of writing about everyday events. You stir in all the magic, humor, joy, and tragedy that life really has for us in the small things as well as the big. I started reading your journal when it was pointed out to me by a friend, shortly after I'd bought The Wild Swans but before I'd managed to read it. I keep reading it because you say interesting things and say them well.

Hi... I read your journal but it's friended on a journal I set up specifically for RSS feeds and people's journals who I don't know. Is that creepy? I hope not. Anyway, I don't remember how I found your journal, but after reading it I read The Wild Swans, and I liked it, and I'm from Hudson WI so it's nice to hear from someone who lives nearby. And I like your stories and hearing about your kids and your writing, so, I stick around. Thanks for sharing.

Hey Peg, Marta here. I have been reading your journal for a while, its one of my favourites, I love the way you write, what you tell us about your family, your daughters.

Miss chatting on YM though.

I read The Wild Swans after Lois Bujold recommended it on the Bujold listserv a while back, and when I discovered LJ and ran across your journal, I added it to my list. When life overruns me, reading (and posting) on LJ gets punted, but other than that I'm a regular reader. I enjoy everything from daily events in your and the girls' lives to the posts on writing.

Hi!

I found you off [livejournal.com profile] jonquil's flist, which I surf from time to time (since she's so cool and all). And I should say that I just read The Wild Swans a few weeks ago. I thought it was splendid: marvelously written, heartbreaking, moving, and open-hearted. I loved the intertwined stories, the way I didn't know how they intersected until I was completed invested in each story, and then the slow realization about the parallel roles, the thematic connections in the stories.

It's quite a lovely book: thank you for writing it.

Hiya. I've read you for a while--I added you, because I was interested in keeping tabs on the LJ community of fantasy/SF writers out there. And then I became interested in reading about your karate lessons and your girls, and all the normal stuff you make seem like such a /story/. And then I finally read one of your books, which is all the more reason to read you here. :)

*waves* I always read because I think you're a really cool lady, but I'm not much with the commenting. Even my close friends complain I don't comment enough to them though, so it's nothing personal. lol

Hi! I started reading you because I was interested in watching the mind of a novelist at work, having found you through the flist of someone else I read. I find I've grown quite interested in reading about the rest of your life as well. I hope that comes across as flattering rather than creepy!

*laughs* It does, I think! Thank you.

HI! I read you regularly as you are on my friends list.
Have fun!
:)

Hi!

I'm a lurker and I'm here because I loved The Wild Swans and I was totally thrilled to discover that you have an LJ. I also enjoy reading about your exploits learning karate and raising your daughters.

I am here to stay in touch with Minnesota now. I like that little slice of home when you talk about going for walks around the lakes, or tea at Latte.

Hey there! I'm Annie. I just graduated from high school and I'm headed off to college in the fall. I found your journal a while ago through Cassie, and I've read it regularly since. Reading your journal actually made me go read "The Wild Swans," which I really enjoyed. I guess I read your journal because I don't really know anyone your age (aside from friends of parents, etc) and it's interesting to see the world through a different perspective. That, and you write beautifully.

Jumping back into lurkdom,
Annie

Hiya :)

I've been reading you on and off for a while, but am shy when it comes to comments :)

[identity profile] zephyrious.livejournal.com 2005-07-01 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
Hi! I read your journal often and have commented a couple times but I mostly lurk. Your posts about karate inspired me to ask my daughter (8) if she would like to take karate lessons. Turns out she would *really* like to do that, so now I just need to get going and find a place (and a time, ack).

[identity profile] pegkerr.livejournal.com 2005-07-01 02:02 pm (UTC)(link)
If you do start karate, let me know. It's been a terrific experience for us, and I'm really glad we started, although yes, it is a bit of a time commitment!

I read you because you're my favorite sister-in-law on LJ! I always feel so up-to-date with my nieces! fyi - We're going on vacation to Idaho & Wyoming on Saturday (whitewater rafting on the Salmon River, and seeing Sun Valley & Grand Tetons). heather

I'm always glad when you comment, Heather. Have fun on your trip; it sounds fabulous!

i can't remember exactly how i found you...Kij Johnson is a friend of several of my friends IRL, so perhaps it started there. i started reading when you were doing a near-daily Glare Report, and as a writer's wife and an avid reader, i was looking for more insight into the process. ultimately i was most excited by the research process, and have stayed for the stories of family life.

i particularly enjoyed the discussion of creepy children's books (like The Giving Tree) a while back.

hi. i'm a tech writer in Seattle.

We met at Nimbus through [livejournal.com profile] psychic_serpent, so when I got my LJ account, I friended you right away. I only comment occasionally, but many of your day-to-day struggles and triumphs resonate with my own experiences, and I look forward to reading your posts daily. We also live within 100 miles of each other, and I like to hear about what's up in the Metro. You're one of the most likeable folks on LJ, Peg!

[identity profile] pegkerr.livejournal.com 2005-07-01 02:02 pm (UTC)(link)
*blushes* Thank you!

I'm a regular reader and I find your thoughts interesting about a lot of things: writing, being a mom, and random thoughts. I think you're a caring person and it's nice to read someone so nice.

(Anonymous) 2005-07-01 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
I read your journal daily (unless I'm so busy I don't touch the computer). I bought Emerald House Rising off a bookstore shelf several years ago on the strength of the Bujold cover quote, and reread it recently for clues about first-novel-writing. Still haven't gotten around to picking up The Wild Swans, but when the ice palace book appears I'll be first in line at my local bookstore. I read your blog because you describe your life so beautifully - and I'm also proudly enrolled in the theoretical parenting lessons.

[identity profile] nmalfoy.livejournal.com 2005-07-01 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
I like hearing your take on various issues, and just your day to day life being a wife and a mother, both of which I am not.

Plus you're cool.

[identity profile] aelfsciene.livejournal.com 2005-07-01 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
I'm still here erratically, due to my summer classes and the ungodly amount of time I manage to waste online if I'm not paying attention. And I rarely comment even in my closest friends' journals, so you're not missing much! o.O

[identity profile] weaselmom.livejournal.com 2005-07-01 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
I've read your LJ for a long time and probably would never have delurked if it weren't for the fact that our mutual beloved friend is going through such an upheaval. When it was at its worst, you reached out halfway across the country and opened yourself to us, a group of IRL strangers whom you yourself knew only through LJ entries. I respect and admire you for closing the circle and adding your wisdom and perspective. But before then, I read for several reasons: because you are so important in the life and heart of our friend; because you are (you know) a very fine writer and you share *so much* of yourself so courageously in this journal; because your life is so different from mine and I find that interesting. Surely there will come a time when you are able to come out here for a visit, see a little of this region that I love so much, and meet all of us in person.

Very best regards to you and your family. And be sure to tell Fiona that I have a ferret with the same name!

[identity profile] pegkerr.livejournal.com 2005-07-01 02:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Getting to know Kij's Seattle crowd better has been one definite silver lining to the thunderclouds we've all endured the last several months. I would love to meet you if/when I get out to Seattle. Don't know when that will be!

I'll pass on your message to Fiona. That's truly fun--"Fiona" is a pretty rare name here in the states (unlike the UK) that she hasn't met many other people who share her name, much less a ferret!

Hey, I'm Nina - I just graduated from Edina High School, and will be attending Kenyon College this fall.

I think I found you through Nanowrimo. I know I friended you because you're from the Twin Cities area and because you're a novelist. :) What has kept you on my friends list, though, are the stories about your daughters.

[identity profile] surely-i-jest.livejournal.com 2005-07-01 06:16 am (UTC)(link)
Well, hi. *weakly* My name's Melanie, and I'm starting to get serious about my writing, so I'm following journals by people who actually do it. I've been a regular reader for the past couple of weeks (since I got mono and discovered the joys of free time), but I think that'll continue. I actually first heard of you from HP fandom, but it's only in this incarnation that I've really read your journal.

I feel like I don't really know enough yet compared to People Who Actually Do This Stuff, so I don't comment; and I'm not so good socially so I don't usually comment on personal posts either. But I do read. And maybe one day I'll feel knowledgeable enough to say something. :>

I'm also fascinated by the number of writers, especially those in the fantasy or scifi realm, who live in Minneapolis. That was the closest big city to the town I grew up in (though Chicago's a little closer now, at college). Is there a secret cabal I don't know about?

[identity profile] surely-i-jest.livejournal.com 2005-07-01 06:18 am (UTC)(link)
And I tried to take Good Writing Advice by deleting an adverb and instead deleted the verb...that should be waves, not weakly!
