Moon in the morning, half day past full

Last night was the full moon, what the girls always charmingly call an "Odette moon" after the magical moon in the movie "The Swan Princess." I saw it shining with particular brilliance high in the sky when I stepped outside last night, but this morning, it hung low above the horizon, now with a discernable waning edge. The sky was a clear and delicate pale blue, and the light had that golden, suffused quality you get in October that makes everything seem to glow. It softened the edges and whiteness of the moon, fading the craters on its surface to a pale blue that matched the blue of the sky, so that it looked like a perfectly round disk of ancient paper, thinned in places almost to transparency.

How sweet that your girls call it and "odette moon." I've always called the crescent moon a Cheshire moon, because it looked like the bit in Disney's Alice in Wonderland where the Cheshire cat left his smile behind.
