More cool design: an amazing staircase

Saw this at Curbly DIY Maven here [[livejournal.com profile] curbly_diymaven]: London-based Levitate Architects created this remarkable staircase to solve a big book storage problem in a small space.

That is SO cool!

Wow, that is really cool. *imagines self crawling on the stairway to find a favorite*

Reminds me of a friend's idea to line his floor with book cabinets. Smooth wooden cabinet doors make a good floor, and then you just lean down and open them up and there are your books.

HEh. I'd worry about spills, though.

brilliant!

[identity profile] weaselmom.livejournal.com 2008-02-18 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
How wonderful! Unless perspective and scale are playing tricks on me, it looks like each stair riser has a little seat built in. It could be the other way, I guess - half of each step could be narrower than the norm.

[identity profile] diatryma.livejournal.com 2008-02-19 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's half of each step being narrower, so you have to go up right-footed. It saves space because you can make the steps steeper.

[identity profile] weaselmom.livejournal.com 2008-02-20 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
Well, rats. It's not a staircase to be pelted up and down, obviously!

[identity profile] diatryma.livejournal.com 2008-02-20 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
You can pelt, you just have to pelt with the right feet. The big staircase I grew up with had a similar thing going on-- at the top, it spiraled ever so slightly, so all of us started going up with the same feet so we'd be all right when it came time to turn.

That's just glorious! I'm in the process of moving and rediscovering all of the books that have been in boxes for too many years. I only wish that I had the room to build something like this.

It's beautiful, but...

[identity profile] rabican.livejournal.com 2008-02-18 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, in the first photo, I admit I got a little confused and was all, "But then you're STEPPING on the BOOKS!"

Not running on all cylinders today, I admit it.

Gah, *wants!*

[identity profile] satakieli.livejournal.com 2008-02-19 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
All right. Made of awesome and all that, but there's still this corner of me that's saying, "But... the grit! Those poor books!" When eventually my dream dwelling is overrun with books and I install my own, I'm putting in a little protective rim on each shelf between the step part and the books. :-)

[identity profile] fajrdrako.livejournal.com 2008-02-19 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
My goodness - that's brilliant!

I love the geometry. The photo itself is artistic.

Ohhhh LOOOOOVE....

[identity profile] mayakda.livejournal.com 2008-02-19 03:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Genius!

[identity profile] perimyndith.livejournal.com 2008-02-20 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
...but what it REALLY needs are lawyer-bookcase style doors, so as to keep the cathair out. And THEN it would be perfect.
