Saw this at Curbly DIY Maven here [[livejournal.com profile] curbly_diymaven]: London-based Levitate Architects created this remarkable staircase to solve a big book storage problem in a small space.

How wonderful! Unless perspective and scale are playing tricks on me, it looks like each stair riser has a little seat built in. It could be the other way, I guess - half of each step could be narrower than the norm.

I think it's half of each step being narrower, so you have to go up right-footed. It saves space because you can make the steps steeper.

You can pelt, you just have to pelt with the right feet. The big staircase I grew up with had a similar thing going on-- at the top, it spiraled ever so slightly, so all of us started going up with the same feet so we'd be all right when it came time to turn.
