The Adult Services section of the County Attorney's Human Services Division (Mental Health) represents the public in seeking commitment for those persons in need of involuntary, court-ordered treatment for mental illness, chemical dependency, mental retardation, and for persons who are mentally ill and dangerous, sexual psychopaths, and/or sexually dangerous persons. Besides family and friends, petitioners may include hospitals and other medical facilities, Adult Protection, Corrections, county attorneys and judges. This division's attorneys review and prepare petitions and appear at all legal hearings, including those involving appeals.

The primary duties and responsibilities for this position include:

* Prepare and/or review all legal documents relating to civil commitment including conferring with treatment professionals, interested persons, petitioners and pre-petition screening
* Conduct all legal proceedings relating to civil commitment, including witness contact and exhibit and trial preparation
* Perform legal research necessary to render opinions and present arguments
* Keep case records and make reports
* Perform all legal duties associated with the judicial commitment of persons with mental illness, mental retardation, mentally ill and dangerous to the public and chemically dependent
* Discuss petitions with the pre-petition screening unit and petitioners prior to issuance
* Attend preliminary hearings, commitment hearings, review hearings and other related hearings

The Ideal Candidate will have:

* Admission to the Bar of the State of Minnesota
* Ten or more years of experience as a practicing attorney
* Knowledge of the principles, methods and practices of legal research and investigation
* Knowledge of judicial procedures and the rules of evidence
* Knowledge of the pleading and practice of effective presentation of court cases
* Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with officials and employees of the county, court officials and the general public
* Skill in the conduct of legal research, analysis of data, determination of proper courses in action and presentation of facts and arguments
* Ability to demonstrate the employee competencies.
