Police stop bicyclists . . . to HUG them?

Video of police stopping bicyclists to give them hugs and helmets. Happiness all around.

It's sort of hard to imagine that happening here.

What I did today to make the world a better place: Donated £5 to Jade Gordon (Tom Felton's girlfriend) to sponsor her for her participation in the UK's Race for the Cure on May 31. (Saw it on Twitter)

Looks like they're only stopping the male bicyclists and letting the women go by. But then, I suppose it would be a bit creepy to have the male cops hugging random women. Maybe there's a female patrol out doing the same thing.

What I'd really like to know is how many of those bicyclists actually kept and continued to use those helmets.

Yeah, that's been mentioned on every forum this has been posted to. However, apparently they only let the first two go by, just after they got there.

The people that I've read posts from that don't wear helmets don't avoid them because they can't afford one, they just don't like them. So I don't think passing out helmets does much good.

That was kind of my thoughts, as well, about the helmets. I wouldn't be surprised if many of the people in that video had helmets sitting at home already.

I have a helmet. It sits on the table by my front door when I take my bike for a ride. I would appreciate someone offering me a helmet out of concern for my safety, but would decline and explain my rationale.

BUT, absolutely fabulous to generate conversation about biking, bike safety, safety patrol, and public health!

That is so sweet! I'm guilty of riding without a helmet, & I certainly wouldn't expect to get hugged!
