*snerk*

I think I'll stick with aerobics, thanks. And walking toward Mount Doom.

That's funny, but I thought just a bite filled you up and you couldn't eat a whole wafer at a time. I love the warning at the end. "Results not typical and stay the hell away from Mordor"

Not if you're a Hobbit. Remember Merry and Pippin? "How many did you eat?" "Four." :-D

Peg, this was great - just what I needed as a pick-me-up.

Was that in the book or the movie (or both). I really need to reread LotR, I got too busy during the school year to read it this year.

Movie, for sure. It's been two years since I read FotR; I *do* recall there being an extensive scene with the Elven gifts, but I don't recall if there was a line about Merry/Pip eating more than they should have, in the books. I imagine Peg would know. *g*

The scene where Merry and Pippin reveal they'd eaten too much was written for the movie.

In the book, Gimli looks at it in Lothlorien, mutters "Cram," tastes it, and gobbles the rest of the cake. The elves bringing it to them laugh and stop him, saying "No more, no more! You have already eaten enough for a long day's march."

"I thought it was only a kind of cram, such as the Dalemen make for journeys in the wild," said the Dwarf.

"So it is," they answered, "But we call it lembas, or waybread, and it is more strengthening than any food made by Men, and it is more pleasant than cram by all accounts."

Later on, when Frodo and Sam are at the end of their journey in Mordor, Tolkien notes that the lembas bread had a virtue without which they would have given up and died long ago.

Of course, as you probably know, it is thought that Tolkien had the Catholic Eucharist in mind when he created lembas bread.

(And yes, I did know that stuff pretty much by heart. Here's a recipe at theonering.net that I haven't tried yet.)

Okay, I was thinking it was the movie, because the movie they showed them eating a lot more of that then they were supposed to. The idea of being able to take one bite of something and be full was an interesting idea to me. Cool for traveling, sucky for normal life because I love eating.

Thanks. I, too, am excessively diverted.

Where did you get the Austen icon?

Oh, right, thanks. I've seen the icons used there, now that you mention it. I have also heard that they can be aggressive about defending their copyrights.

Right now I'm doing their Mansfield Park group read (not that I have time!) so maybe I won't borrow their icons right now. ;-(
