Home today
Nov. 18th, 2002 09:29 pmFiona woke up this morning covered with a spectacular display of hives. I sent her back to bed, called into work to report that I was staying home with a sick child, and went back to bed myself (and slept for twelve hours. Oh, bliss.) I took her into see the doctor this afternoon, but the hives were already fading.
And then started coming back again this evening. (????) But she doesn't have any sign of fever or anything, so hives or not, I'm sending her back to school tomorrow.
Anyway, it all meant an extra day at home. I exercised, did laundry, and worked on catching up on my household bookkeeping. A pleasant interlude, mostly because the sleep felt wonderful.
We have family night on Monday nights. Lately, we've hit upon the idea of taking out copies of the old PBS show Cosmos (with Carl Sagan) from the library and watching an episode of that together. The girls are a bit young for it, perhaps, but they watch it with somewhat focused attention for the most part. I feel virtuous for trying to sneak some science into their little brains.
This is a boring entry, I fear. I've been a very boring person lately. Sorry.
What have I been thinking about? Well, LOTR, of course, as I said yesterday. Am also contemplating about the approach of the Christmas season, with my usual rising dread. When you're a mom of young children who works outside the home, Christmas really seems not so much fun as a whole lot of obligations and work. And I'm the one who'll end up being stuck with most of that work, and so I find that more and more, as the years go by, I can't help thinking "Bah humbug" whenever I contemplate Christmas in the latter part of November.
