With thanks and love to John Hughes
Aug. 7th, 2009 08:42 amI was genuinely grieved to hear this morning of the death of John Hughes. He did a lot of work that I really admired, but like many, I had a special soft spot in my heart for Ferris Bueller's Day Off, particularly because it was a message I think I especially need to hear. The person I identified with most with in that movie was definitely Cameron: stressed out because of his family and inner perfectionism, pessimistic, worried about the future. I needed to hear the message of that movie, that taught many of us to cut class once in a while, be the parade and live like Ferris. That was a great gift.
Thanks so much, John. This is for you, a fitting send off with Ferris and a cast of thousands, with admiration and gratitude:
Edited to add: Also, a must read, a blog entry from a woman (her Twitter feed is here) who had a correspondence with John Hughes for years, prompted by her writing a fan letter to him to tell him how much she liked his movies when she was a teenager.
Edited to add again: Did you know that Alan Ruck was 29 years old when he played the role of Cameron? I had no idea!
