College visits
Jun. 23rd, 2010 03:38 pmFiona is spending the week making college visits, as this is Minnesota Private Colleges Week. She went to see Hamline (2nd visit) on Monday and St. Catherine University on Tuesday. Today, she's going to Macalaster (2nd visit), tomorrow to Carleton and St. Olaf (that's maybe a third visit on each) and on Friday to Gustavus.
We will also hope to squeeze in visits to Lawrence University and Beloit College this summer.
She wanted to go back to Hamline because she went last year and wasn't particularly drawn to it, but wondered whether the problem was that we just didn't get a particularly good tour director. This time, the tour director wasn't a student but actually someone who worked in the admission office. The tour this time was more useful not so much because of what it told us about Hamline (it's probably still not going to be her first choice) but because what she gleaned about the college admission process. They said that visiting a campus more than once will help, because it indicates strong interest. So that's why she scheduled additional visits for Macalaster, Carleton and St. Olaf. Carleton is Rob's alma mater, and St. Olaf is mine.
St. Catherine's seemed nice. But it was disappointing that they have no theater department, nor any indication of any martial arts club amongst the social clubs. She wants a place where she can continue to practice her karate. One very appealing thing about Lawrence was that the recruiter we met at a college fair suggested that if she came there, they could probably arrange to have her teach karate--and pay her.
