We're back from the hospital. Fiona had a CAT scan, and the results, thank heavens, were negative. No hairline fracture of the skull and no bleeding in the brain. She's been told no contact sports for a week. Fortunately, her next screening for her second degree black belt takes place after that point. Edited to add: If I didn't make it clear, she has a grade one concussion.
The assault took place as she was walking home after her workshift at Dreamhaven Books, a little after 2 p.m. She was two blocks from the store, when she turned a corner and saw two men walking toward her on the sidewalk. She got only a hazy description: two black men, taller than her, in their maybe late twenties/early thirties. She stepped a little to the side to let them pass and without any warning whatsoever, one punched her in the right temple, knocking her to the ground.
She managed to kick the assailant with both legs. She might have gotten him in either the stomach or the groin, anyway, he doubled up a bit. Her purse was seized and the two took off running.
She went back to Dreamhaven where Greg called the police.
Her phone, fortunately, was in her pocket, not the purse, and she didn't have her iPod with her. She lost her keys, student ID, checkbook, checkcard and bus pass, as well as $20 cash. She had another chunk of cash in her pocket which the thief did not get. We managed to cancel all the cards (including the bus card) before the thieves attempted to access them. She's mourning the other little personal things in the purse that she'll never see again. A nifty silver pen given to her by a friend. Her little rock that she carried everywhere. Her plastic cockroach. (Everyone needs a plastic cockroach.) Her Slayer license.
I'm mourning the loss of her peace of mind. All of our peace of mind. Yes, we know that there has been crime in our neighborhood. But this is shockingly, deeply personal.
I stopped by the dojo before I got home and took her to the hospital, to talk with our karate instructor. I told him that I had told her on the phone that she did everything right. She couldn't possibly have blocked that blow, but she defended herself as best she could from the ground. She lost her purse, but her life is more important than her purse. He agreed with me, saying he considered that a successful self-defense, and he will talk to her in the next day or two to help her process what she needs to process. He said he'll probably have her talk to his wife, another black belt, who was mugged and beaten very badly before she started karate. Being able to talk to someone who's gone through this, I hope, will help.
It will be difficult to know how else, really, to react to this. I don't want my girls to be afraid to walk down the street in their own neighborhood. I still feel...I dunno. I'm waiting for the fury to kick in. It hasn't yet, but I don't know why. Greg, the owner at Dreamhaven, is perhaps furious enough for all of us.
Fiona said something else that almost broke my heart. She told me that just before she was jumped, she passed a young mother, carrying a baby. She told me, "I'm glad that they picked me instead of her."
