This is the first year since the girls were born that I haven't hit all the milestones on pictures. We did not get a picture of Delia for her birthday, and we are not taking a picture of the family for a Christmas card. This has disheartened me so much I'm not sure I will send out a holiday letter at all this year.
It was simply a financial decision. Money for portraits is a luxury we simply cannot afford while we're struggling to pay the mortgage and other necessary bills. And yet it bothers me so much. I feel like our family is being robbed of its history. I was so proud that we had made this a priority, that the girls had a record of their growing up that they could show their own children (I hope) someday.
Little things have dropped away over the years as we've retrenched, again and again, trying to keep ourselves going. I know that in the grand scheme of things, I must care for my family and make the wisest decisions on the priority of spending money. It should be a small thing.
Yet for some reason, this one hurts just about the most.
