Eric and I only went to one venue, the water tower at Prospect Park, colloquially known as the Witch’s Hat Tower. We chose it because Eric and I are reading Emma Bull’s War for the Oaks aloud together, and there’s a scene in the book where Eddi goes to the top of the tower where she meets the Queen of Air and Darkness.
It was worth the trip; the view was spectacular. Unfortunately I can’t show you a picture because when we got to the top I reached for my camera, only to discover I’d left my iPod at Fiona’s apartment. Ordinarily, when this sort of thing happens, when I want to take a picture but can’t, I just shrug and tell myself to take the picture with my heart. It was a little difficult to do so, however, because the wind was so fierce and cold that it was more than a little distracting. Someone said that it 30 mph. It was cold enough to cut us like knives, and it felt as though we were about to be blown off the tower. Maybe the Queen of Air and Darkness was pissed that we were invading her sanctuary. It was hard not to be able to get a picture when the tower is open to the public only one day a year. The cold wind meant we weren’t tempted to linger. Oh, well. Maybe that means I’ll just have to come back another time, preferably on a calmer day.
Eric and I agreed that still, the climb and the view were worth it. It will add to our enjoyment of that chapter, which is coming up soon.
For those who are not local, you can read about the tower and see some good pictures at this link.
