pegkerr: (Use well the days)
I had a little trouble at first this week coming up with a unifying theme, but then I realized it should be comfort.

A dear friend of mine, Naomi Kritzer, had surgery this week, and I took on the task of putting together a gift basket for her on behalf of a group of our friends. It was great fun to shop for all the various items I added (World Market is the store for this), and it was interesting to ponder the question "What would be the most comforting thing to have when you are not feeling well?" We have all needed comfort this year. Of course, food shouldn't be only a reward, but there IS something about having special things to eat, perhaps sweet and crunchy and salty, and not the usual things but a touch luxurious, that feels particularly comforting.

Along the same lines, I ran an errand to Bachman's, a local garden store (for what seems to be the dozenth time this month) and I stopped in the little cafe/bakery on the premises where I bought one of the decadent little opera cakes that you see pictured in the lower-left corner of the card. Who would have thought you could go shopping for compost and mulch and have the opportunity to buy a piece of decadence like this? Just three bites, but it is topped with gold leaf, and comprised of elegant layers of caramel and chocolate, and utterly delicious. What could be better?

I’ve become very interested in the Danish concept of hygge and have tried to incorporate it into my life. Candles, blankets, comfort foods, and especially time with friends. That’s been difficult during the pandemic, but restrictions are easing, and soon we’ll be able to do more than just drop off a gift basket. We’ll be able to be together, offering comfort in person. One translation I’ve seen of hygge is “coziness together.”
