Words: 200. I know this is pitiful, but I finished the farmer's market scene. Then I scrounged around trying to find my copy of List Yourself: Listmaking as the Way to Self-Discovery, intending to work through the list as character interview questions for Jack and Solveig. I didn't find it, but I remembered after fifteen minutes of looking that I had actually copied the questions into a file on my computer and started filling it out, maybe a year ago. I read it through. So: an hour and a half at the keyboard. This is good, a longer session.
Notes: Still troubled that I am producing so few words, but I'm starting to slowly, slowly set a regular schedule of glaring time. Good. Progress in baby steps. Yeesh, though. You wouldn't think that I've actually written one or two of these things before.

I love doing character interviews. They are such a great way to get a sense of your character's voice and to learn things about them that you never knew--like one of my characters was fond of the way his ex-wife snored. He thought it was adorable. You would never in a million years expect this man to think such a thing, but it just came out one day.

It's a truly wonderful exercies, and little things like that are what make characters really come alive.

Character plotting and planning is just as important, if not more so, than the actual daily wordcount. Definitely some good progress then, if you worked on that. And congrats on finishing the scene!

I think it's great that you've carved out a chunk of time that you're staying consistent with. Given the hectic schedule you have with work and family on top of writing, it's nothing short of amazing. I admire your industry.

More listing!

Hey, have you seen List Your Creative Self, by the same authors? Example questions from the back cover:
  • List your greatest fears about letter your creativity flow.
  • List the accomplishments from your childhood you take the most pride in.
  • List the ways you creatively solve everyday dilemmas and situations.
Looks kinda neat. Thanks for the pointer to the original.

200 words x 365 days in a year = 73,000 words = novel. Or maybe 3/4 of one, depending. Kick it up to an average of 300 words or more and you get into six figure wordcounts. You're moving forward; that's all that matters. I'll take 200 good words any day!

This is NOT pitiful. This is terrific! You are making progress. Go, you!

(And maybe I should start my own program of job-hunt-glaring... it's a useful way to look at a process that is fraught with internal angst and procrastination...)
