I liked the woman our dentist recommended. We need to pull two of Fiona's teeth immediately, pull two of Delia's in January, start Delia on braces in January, and start Fiona with braces in 2006. The orthodontist gave us the financial information we needed to make some decisions. We will crunch the numbers on our budget, and then talk with the karate sensei about our options, and make our decision soon about karate lessons for me and the girls soon.

I'm sorry; I was hoping for an orthodontic miracle for you. ("She needs almost no work! The total for both girls is $200!"

Here's hoping that it's quick and relatively painless. I had braces for 2 years only, and compared to some of my friends, that was a blink of an eye. So I'm thinking good orthodontic thoughts for both of the girls, that they might get by with minimal wrenching of teeth, and for you, that you might get by with minimal wrenching of the pocketbook.

Did the orthodontist say that is vital that Delia start braces soon? Because I would not be quick to start them on her. If I am correct she's about 8 years old? Many people I know of who had braces at a young age, about younger than 12, ended up having to have braces again when they were teenagers. I would discuss this with her, because she just seems so young to have them. I was 12 when I had mine and even that was pretty young.

The reason that we have to act know is that Delia is jutting her lower jaw forward to compensate for the position of her teeth, which is overstimulating the growth of her lower jaw. We have to stimulate upper jaw growth, and there is a limited window of time for that. Waiting until she is 12 would be too late.

Here's hoping for a minimum of intervention. Due my small jaw I had a lot of teeth pulled as a child, and had braces and headgear for years. (Fortunately Marissa has great teeth so maybe things will average out for our kid or kids.)

For ghod's sakes get a second opinion before you pull teeth. It's a lifetime decision and should be a last resort.

This is the second opinion. And they are baby teeth, not permanent teeth that we are pulling. I have seen the X-rays myself, and the reason why they must be pulled is obvious, even to a totally non-dentally educated lay person like me.
