After karate class last night (I finally got my white belt!) I went over for dinner to [livejournal.com profile] minnehaha's (B. and K.). The occasion was the semi-regular arrival of the Fabian Seafood truck, which arrives every six weeks or so from Texas (last Thursday's was the last of the winter). [livejournal.com profile] lollardfish and [livejournal.com profile] buttonlass were there too, and [livejournal.com profile] 90_percent_sure joined a little later. We had shrimp (wrapped in prosciutto and basil and broiled), a salad with oysters fried in cornmeal, shrimp crepes and Crab Casanova (cooked in wine cognac). And wine (we toasted my white belt with it), and a cheese course for dessert. It is thanks to eating dinner at [livejournal.com profile] minnehaha's that I have discovered the decadent pleasure of eating cheese dripped with truffle honey.

I took particular delight in this dinner, not only because of the wonderful company, but because I know nobody else in my family would have touched any of this stuff. Their loss!

You know, I've been hearing about your karate class and your new gi, I was wondering, what style are you studying? I used to train, but not for some time now.

I'd have tried all of that, it sounds yummy.

My sisters might have been willing to try it. My brother wouldn't have touched it.

All the females and none of the males in our family would happily eat all those things.

We supplied the cheese, not any of the guests.

And the crab dish was flambed with cognac.

Wine doesn't have enough alcohol in it to flambe.

The organization is National Karate, which operates a number of schools in Minnesota. They describe it as a hybrid style, which is closest to Tae Kwon Do.

Very cool! I studied Tae Kwon Do, Shudokai and Judo many, many years ago... Now, just Taiko. :)
