Out of curiosity, I dug out my 1977 journal and quickly found this entry on June 5 (written when I was but a callow teen):
Saw the most super movie today: Star Wars. It's hard to describe. There was so much going on and it was so diverse. It's--indescribable! I'm going to see it again!
Not very articulate at that age. Sorry.

My mother wouldn't let me see Star Wars. Or Grease, which were the two movies that everybody else was going to see. I was in third or fourth grade. *pout*

She did let me see Star Wars the following summer, though, when it came back (though I suppose it might have been still playing; I didn't keep track of such things then).

*startled laugh* Why? Because I was keeping a daily journal at that age? My choice of vocabulary? What?

I wish I'd kept a journal at that age.

I'm curious as to what made you describe the movie as 'diverse.' Do you remember? That was long before the word gained mass popularity.

If I had been a journal keeper in 1977 (the year I was born, incidently) it might have gone something like this:

Week 16: Began to teeth. Mom and Dad took me to this movie--Star Wars. I was quite entertained by the space battles and forgot to cry when I wet my diaper.

Week 17: Made faces at crib mobile all day. Mom and Dad took me to see Star Wars again. Explosion of Death Star so dramatic that I squealed and flung my little fists everywhere.

Week 18: Star Wars again. Mom and Dad discuss making me a little Wookie for Halloween.

And so on. I saw Star Wars seven or eight times in the first year of my life. But since I wasn't keeping a journal then....I have no idea what I really thought. According to Mom, I was awfully quiet while watching Star Wars, but definitely awake. They only had to remove me from the theatre once for crying.

I saw SW in 1977! I was overwhelmed--I think I saw it ten times. No movie-going experience, even after all these many years, comes close to the first time I saw "A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away...". *sigh*

Well, I certainly don't remember, specifically, what was going through my head specifically when I wrote that. I suppose I meant the overwhelming sense that the movie conveyed of a wholly imagined universe, with so many strange and wonderous creatures, each intersecting the story. The aliens in the cantina, the robots, the fighter pilots of the rebel alliance, the storm troopers, the moisture farmers. It was dazzling, intoxicating, and it hinted at a galaxy's worth of stories.

I probably saw it close to thirty times that first year, much to my family's consternation. They thought I was crazy.

I probably was. It was a very unhappy year for me, and I felt exactly like Luke, longing to leave home, feeling that there was something out there that I could be a part of, something big and important--if only I could get away and figure out what it was. At the same time I was dazzled by Leia's confidence, her steely kick-butt swagger, and I desperately wanted to be that confident, that take-charge, and yes, that important.

And Han Solo was just fun.

In the early days, it was all about Luke and Han--the Testosterone twins. Now I identify with Leia more and more, and want to be Just Like Her. Kickass because there just isn't any other way to be.

I was four when it first came out. I did see it then - do not remember much of so doing, butwhat I do remember had a heck of an impact on me.
