Went to see "March of the Penguins," because [livejournal.com profile] minnehaha B. pointed out that there was nothing better for coping with the ninth day in a row of 90 degree temperatures (or was it the tenth?) than going to an air-conditioned theater to pretend you are in Antarctica.

Next time I complain about parenting, slap me upside the head and remind me it could be worse; I could be an Emperor penguin, okay? At least I don't have to starve for two months to nurture my child. And then walk seventy miles to get dinner. And then walk seventy miles back and throw it up so my kid can eat.

Bwah.

I've been rather looking forward to seeing that movie, but I admit I hadn't seen it in those lights.

I am full of sympathy for you. The heat make me feel utterly miserable as well, as though someone had turned up the gravity, as though an enormous hand was pressing me to the ground and smothering me at the same time. And I suspect that where you are, there's nasty humidity, just like here. I can deal with temperatures in the 90s without horror as long as the air is dry, but in Boston it never is. Yesterday, at 9 AM, the humidity was 91%. So I've been moving in calculated chessbord leaps from one airconditioned location to the next.

(This reminds me of a cartoon described to me years ago:
Passerby: You know, it's not the heat, it's the humidity!
Protagonist: If I hear one more person say that, I'm going to scream.
Passerby 2: You know, it's the heat, it's the humidity!
Protagonist: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAUUUUUHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Passerby 3: You know, it's not the heat OR the humidity--it's all the people screaming!)

Thank heaven for inexpensive window air-conditioners and cold baths. And movies about penguins, apparently.

After the movie, my 16-year-old begged for a pet penguin. I threatened to send her off to a place with lots and lots of penguins.

(Kristin sent me, on account of our mutual interest in HP.)

Somehow this makes me want to fish out my old childhood copy of Mr. Popper's Penguins.

And maybe install a skating rink down cellar, too. :-)

My 16-year-old is an animal whisperer and always has been. She'd take in a wolverine and tell us that it just needed some love and attention, and the wolverine would become quite sweet. Not that I have any intentions of letting her do any such thing.

I read that book, I remember it fondly. I'd forgotten about it until you mentioned it just now. Yeah! I liked the cellar skating rink, too.

Totally impressed with penguins, now. And weren't the baby penguins all fat from being fed just too adorable for words?

I can't wait to see it. Princess loves penguins.

Penguin Woes

The trials of an Emperor penguin can't be any worse than being a member of the sandwich generation with adult children's problems, grandchildren problems, and aging parents. Many of "permanent parents" would relish just getting to throw up once in awhile.
Thanks for great journals.
