Technical Difficulties

pegkerrOn our way to Thanksgiving dinner at my brother-in-law's house, I said to Rob, "You're in third gear. You should be in fifth gear."
He pulled the gear shift into neutral, looked puzzled, and said, "I can't find any gear."
Yes. Our clutch had entirely failed in the middle of the highway.
Rob managed to make it to the off-ramp, and we limped to the top and stopped. I went to a nearby house and borrowed a phone to call AAA. Then we sat in the car for forty-five minutes, waving other cars past (we were amused by the ones that came up that long ramp right behind us without ever noticing the blinking hazard lights and then just sat there, wondering why we didn't turn).
Finally the tow truck came, and the car was towed to our friendly local mechanic's shop (closed for Thanksgiving Day, of course). Our home was only a few blocks away, so we got Rob's car and headed back out to the feast. So . . .
This means I am stuck on the biggest shopping day of the year without a car. I don't know if the service station will be open today . . . must call . . . but I may be stuck the entire weekend without a car. Phooey.
Oh, well. At least I have the money to repair it for once. And we got off the highway safely and all. I'm so mellow with Thanksgiving good cheer that I'm not letting it get to me.
I suppose we can bus to the downtown stores at least if need be.
