Oh, yeah, Banderas! But I've been wondering how this is different from Mad Hot Ballroom...

Have you seen Mad Hot Ballroom? I do want to see the Banderas movie, because, yes, it looks like hot ballroom dancing. (!) But based on the trailer, these look to be 2 very different movies.

MHB is a documentary, TTL is "based on a true story"; MHB is about middle-school students, TTL is about high-school students; MHB focuses mostly on the students - they are the "stars" - and very lightly on the teachers, TTL seems to be focusing a great deal on the "sexy" ballroom dance teacher; MHB is about a program in the NYC middle-schools and thus follows a number of schools as they practice for a middle-school dance competition that is a culmination of a school-based program, TTL seems to be focusing on just one school and the competition seems to be outside of a school system wide program; MHB is about students being able to master standard ballroom dance moves and techniques, TTL seems to be about innovation in ballroom dance technique (the closest movie comparison to TTL would probably be Strictly Ballroom); MHB had students learning dances in both the "Smooth" and "Latin" ballroom dances, TTL seems to be focusing solely on the "Latin" dances; in MHB the students are themselves and are interviewed in vignettes were they talk about school & friends & hopes etc. - part of the charm of this movie is that they are simply students; in TTL the "students" are actors who are telling a story.

In conclusion, I think these are probably very different movies. I would highly recommend seeing Mad Hot Ballroom! It is a charming, fun, and poignant documentary. I'm also looking forward to Take The Lead (I'm assuming that's its title) because it looks to be a sexy ballroom dance movie, and I do especially love the latin ballroom dances. But I expect to enjoy it for very different reasons.

Thanks for the heads-up - I didn't know anything about that. It does look very good - reminds me a bit of "Save the Last Dance" (which also combines 'classic' and hip-hop, although the 'classic' in that case is ballet).

I miss dancing. A lot.

I did see MHB, and liked it--and you're very right about those details. And I would definitely see TTL, for Banderas if nothing else, but I was just struck at the similarities when I saw the TTL trailer, earlier. Thanks for the rundown on it.
