both as a parent and as a progressive. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] aome for pointing out this post by [livejournal.com profile] msscribe. I live in a state where the Republicans who have just taken over the state government and are facing a huge budget deficit think that their time can best be spent trying to pass a bill rescinding basic civil rights for gays and lesbians (fortunately, enough of them seem to be coming to their senses that it looks as though it isn't going to get enough support this session). Faced with bone-headed stupidity like that, I really needed the laugh. Thanks.

Cheers,
Peg

Glad you enjoyed the laugh. :)

And - sheesh - to the things people choose to put their energy towards. Here, the local Game Commission was recently after a local couple for having an unregistered pet squirrel. They'd had him for ten *years*, obviously taking good care of him and not bothering anybody. Nice use of our taxpayer money....

[Don't get me started on the article today about how the local PA/NJ bridge commission execs gave themselves fat raises, while raising our tolls as much as 400% a few months back.]

I hope gay rights stay in place in MN. There's few enough of them, as it is.

I read your tale too, and thought it was hilarious!

And yeah, I hope the forces of intolerance don't trash our human rights ordinance... which actually is for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people. (I know we were the first state to put such protection in place, but I don't remember if some others have gotten around to it too by now.)

(And yeah, this is a gentle reminder {waves to Peg} that us bisexuals and genderqueeries and suchlike are also in the ordinance, and that that's really important to remember and acknowledge this. I remember Norm Coleman's strategy to try to play divide and conquer by bi- and trans- baiting the gays and lesbians, back when he was mayor of St. Paul and refusing to sign the Pride Day proclamation because it included bis and transgenderfolk instead of "normal gays and lesbians", and I'm sure he's just thrilled at the prospect of "his" state rescinding the human rights ordinance altogether. Grr. Anyhow... so I'm kind of touchy about getting accidentally erased from the legislation even by people that I know didn't mean to leave us out. Thanks for caring about it, though, and for doing good stuff to bring people together. It is appreciated, even though I might not say that enough.)

Thanks for the reminder, Elise

I did call my house legistlator, by the way, to protest the proposed bill. (He's voting against it, thank goodness, and he protested to the bill's authors for even raising the stupid thing in the first place. He thinks that it isn't going to pass).

*sigh* As another Minnesotan, I am with you on the Appalled Front over our legislature's apparent need for guidance. Budget, folks, budget. Not hate legislation.

I keep calling. Hopkins is a very nice place to live, but it comes with a serious responsibility to call conservative legiaslators frequently.

Thanks for the link, though. I needed a good laugh.

meanwhile back in illinois, we have a democrat in the gubernatorial mansion for the first time since i moved here and our human rights ordinance just made it out of committee. (i've been working for groups supporting that ordinance since 1993--the ordinance itself was not new at that time.) mind you, nobody's passed any legislation yet but at least we elected the candidate who would sign it if it ever does pass.

and thanks for posting the link--it gave me a nice laugh for a monday morning.

Pawlenty says he'll veto it.

But it would be a disgrace to all of us if it ever got that far.

Well, as a parent and a progressive too (obviously) I'm horrified by the fact that people can still be so stupid. I couldn't help myself. :) I have no sympathy for idiots. And if I did anything, at least she knows not everyone thinks as narrowly as her and her cult do.
