Working one's way down the list is a fine idea, perhaps including the nominees as well, since there are great movies every year. I think carbonel is doing something very like that in working her way through Leonard Maltin's best movies list.

Interesting. For the years between 1989 and 2006, I've seen 14 out of 18. 1988 and before? I've seen four. (Sound of Music, Casablanca, Gone with the Wind, West Side Story. I've seen a stage version of Amadeus and several other Hamlets, but obviously that doesn't count.)

Gladiator the movie I didn't much care for, but the soundtrack is actually quite beautiful -- and instead of pulling the John Williams Pretending He's Written Something Better Than Holst trick, they just went ahead and used Holst! I liked that very much about it, and the final set of tracks has this haunting vocal line that lingers long after the music stops. Even if you avoid the movie, the music is worth a hear.

Apropos of nothing, I put American Beauty in the same category as Saving Private Ryan and Schindler's List, in that they were movies that made me very uncomfortable as I watched them but in a good way, because they made me face some life truths that I had done my best to avoid before then.

I had to gird my psychic loins for all of them, and I can't say that I really "enjoyed" them either, at least not in the happy escapist way that I enjoyed Lord of the Rings. I am glad that I watched them and I feel better for it.

Kind of sad that of the post-1966 portion of the list, I've seen three movies, two of those with so much regret that I'd be happy if those movies dropped off the face of the earth, and am interested in seeing only one that I haven't yet seen (Gandhi). 1966 and earlier, I've seen four movies, and am interested in seeing a bunch more.

... I bet I'd be much more interested in a best animated movie list...

I am surprised that you haven't seen Braveheart or Schindler's List. I haven't seen a lot of movies on this list (I don't get to the movies much, nor do I seem to get around to renting things) but I've seen both of those, and were I to make a list of movies I think you'd like, they'd both be on it.

Braveheart has a small amount of completely unnecessary, egregious homophobia in it, and as a result Lyda won't watch it. Which is too bad, because I think she would love the movie.

Schindler's List is rather more of an upper than you'd expect from a Holocaust movie, though there are plenty of incredibly disturbing scenes.

Also, I can't believe Crash beat out Brokeback Mountain! I don't want to prejudice you against Crash, but honestly, it didn't hold a candle to Brokeback. See what you think.
