I read Goleman's work (see also his book on the varieties of intelligence) so long ago that I'd forgotten about the Purdy Game. I remember reading somewhere, though, that the 'Ring Around the Rosie' game is thought to have started as a similar kind of response to the Black Death, when plague ravaged Europe.
