I didn't find it terribly useful at all; mileage obviously varies. While it's obvious that pretty much anybody interested votes based on their own values (whether explicitly stated and understood or not), the term of art, "Values Voter," points to something real -- largely Christian conservatives for whom certain particular issues (making sure that SSM remains not legally valid, moving toward more restrictions on abortion and fewer restrictions on religious practice in the public/governmental square) are of particular, and perhaps central importance.
(Me, as somebody who favors the state honoring SSM, I'm not sure that I much care whether it's not recognized or on double secret probation and not recognized, but maybe that's just me; a lot of folks -- George Bush, Howard Dean and John Kerry, for example -- all of whom are against it, seem to think that the difference is important.)
We can play at etymology around that, if we'd like, and discuss how "antiwar voters" really aren't antiwar, say, but I'm not sure what the point of that would be, either.
