Tomorrow is the Diamond Nationals, a karate tournament being held in St. Paul. We will be there all day. The girls are competing, Delia in weapons and sparring, and Fiona in form, weapons and sparring. And then we have tickets to see the finals tomorrow night.

And I . . . (gulp) am JUDGING! I mean, what the hell were they thinking, talking me into it? But they are always rather desperate for judges, and if I'd agree to it, they'd defray part of the girls' entrance fees. So I agreed, thinking they'd have me judging the really little kids, lower belts. I just took a look at my ring assignment, and holy cow. They have me judging my own belt level.

Don't tell anyone.

At least there are three judges, and they average the scores. Still . . .ack. I'm nervous about this.

If I had to hazard a guess, it's that they have realised and understand that your passion for karate goes beyond simply attending classes -- and that they are giving you the opportunity to participate fully in the community that surrounds karate, in all its aspects.

My chant for dealing with fear is, "If I survived getting arrested at the Aquatenial Parade, I can survive *this*!" For the time being you could use, "At least I'm not the French judge for the couple's figure skating competition at the Salt Lake Olympics!"

You'll do fine. I have faith in my "white chick from the suburbs".
