I told Rob "I can't cook dinner unless you go to the grocery store."

Rob and the girls left about, I think about 4:30. Maybe 5:00?

It is 7:30 and they are not back yet. The dinner I'd planned will take a while to cook, too.

Dinner is going to be damn late. This is bad because tomorrow is the girls' first day back at school in two weeks, and I wanted them to get to bed early.

Geez, where the heck are they?

They got home at 8:00. I jettisoned my planned dinner and had tortellini waiting for them when they got home.

It took me an hour to get through checkout at the store today. Sunday afternoons are apparently crazy at those stores that start their weekly specials Sunday instead of Friday. I never knew that, but while waiting in line I had time to learn a lot from fellow grocery shoppers.

Perhaps they made an unfortunate choice of store, like I did.

When I first started reading this entry I thought it was going to be about malapropisms, because you wrote, "unless you go to the grocery story." Of course, we did get a grocery "story" (sort of--what actually happened?) so that wasn't a complete misdirect. ;)

Holy smokes! Do you live near a university whose academic term starts tomorrow? I didn't go grocery shopping this afternoon partly because I guessed that the Sunday before classes start it would be overcrowded and understaffed, just like it was on Thanksgiving Monday afternoon and for the same reasons.

Sending someone else to grocery store late in afternoon for something one needs to make for dinner = Iffy.
Picky eater + grocery store = Dangerous.
Child (or teen) + grocery store = Extremely dangerous.

Actually, there was some benefit in taking the girls alone. Presumably, they put stuff in the cart they are actually willing to eat. But for the most part, they did stick to the list. The very long list.

Yeah, I know. In deciding whether to take the kid(s), one always has to weigh the increased time and money spent against the possibility of not having to listen to "There's nothing to eat" constantly until the next grocery run.

I'm not sure whether I phrased it confusingly or you're asking why a parent would have to listen to such complaints or you're asking how picking out the food keeps the kid from making such complaints.

If the first or the last, what I meant was that if the kid picks out the food, the kid's complaints about there being nothing to eat can more easily be ignored. If the second, well, FSV of "have to," I guess!
