Someone on [livejournal.com profile] poor_skills mentioned www.wheresgeorge.com, which tracks dollar bills through the internet. I am also aware of Book Crossing, which is a site where people abandon books in public places and then track them through the internet as new readers pick them up. (There are several copies of The Wild Swans out there in the wild.)

Can you think of other sites that track items through the internet so that people can see where they went?

Geocaching.com has a system of travel bugs, meant to travel from cache to cache. They can be tracked. They're generally made with a goal (e.g., "I'm hoping to make it home to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, in time for summer"), but really the fun is in watching them move around.

I have to look up the url, but in Plenty magazine there was a piece on a salvage website that people can use to find really good stuff that others have thrown out. There are sections for most major cities, including ours, Philadelphia, but I have yet to check it out even though I'm the queen of recycling what others don't want. :D (When we finish working on the kitchen redo the stainless steel restaurant counter I brought home from a few blocks away years ago will finally be in place! Among many other great finds that will have a place in the new kitchen.) People take photos of the items they find and upload them with the address and directions where they can be found and then interested parties can come along and claim them.

That reminds me: I still need to get a subscription (an online one, to save paper) to Plenty magazine. And I need to dig out the copy I do have to find the url for that salvage website.

We got one of those dollar bills in change a while ago. We were remarking on it, but never went to the website. I think I spent it the same day.

There are several other money ones: I think the one for Canada is "Whereswilly" (For our $5.00 bill, with PM Wilfred Laurier: our $1 and $2 bills having been replaced by coins), and I've also seen ones marked with something more generic like Wherehaveibeen.com.
