go to my 25th high school reunion? It's about 400 miles away.

In other news, [livejournal.com profile] queerasjohn has updated, so you can read all the latest on his gallbladder surgery.

Yes you should go. I just went with my husband to his (also far away) and there is nothing better than flying out of state to pay $70 for a plate of pasta and undercooked beef. I also enjoyed paying $7 per drink just to enjoy the DJ and laugh at the people on the dance floor.

I think you should go Peg, if finances allow. It's one of those experiences (good or bad) that should be had.

But my opinion is slightly biased, I worked for the yearbook and would pass out to see all my friends from High School and how they've changed.

So, maybe you should try a Pro/Con list and save yourself the headache of forcing a trip that isn't worth it.

Whatcha think?

I enjoyed the couple of high school reunions I went to, but in a rather odd way. I discovered that while I still didn't fit in with those people, I no longer minded it. Was rather glad actually...

You should go, because:

(a) you are critically-acclaimed, successful novelist person and can be smug

(b) it is better to regret things you have done than things you haven't

(c) you can write it off as research on how characters change over time ;)

Depends - how much do you care about seeing those people again? Were you more attached to high school or college? I haven't made it to a single reunion (5 or 10) for either high school or college yet, given that I was on the other side of the country and the timing was poor. I regret missing my college reunion a lot more than the high school one (given that I had a lot more friends in college) although, in each case it would have been interesting to see what happened to people. For high school, I think it's more fun to be smug (and you *do* have something to be smug about). For college, I think it's more fun just to *go*. Then again, I haven't managed either one, so what do I know? :-P

Go if the finances will allow. It will give you a chance to see people--hopefully there are a couple that you want to see!

I missed my 15 year high school, but 20 is coming up really fast!

Only if you want to see the people there. If you didn't enjoy high school, then I'd suggest skipping it. If you enjoyed it and you want to see people, then go.

Hmmm...
Was there a 10th, 20th reunion? Did you go?
If the answer is no to anyone of these, then I would recommend you go.

Heh. Truer words were never spoken. ;-)

I not only attended my 20th, I was on the Reunion Committee as the webmaster and database maintenance person. Very interesting, shall we say...and a good reminder why I no longer live in that place. However, I did have some good chats with others who had fled the suburban bubblemind of [unnamed outer-ring suburb of Minneapolis-St. Paul]. And it was very gratifying to have at least one person come up to me who only made it to the reunion because he did a Google search and found the web site I'd created.

If you can afford the money and the time, I'd go, especially if you didn't make it to the 20th (or they didn't have one). 400 miles isn't too terribly far; you could make a weekend road trip of it, unless you prefer flying. Hey, you might even find some inspiration to kick-start your work in progress. ;-)

Yes, if either
(1)you want to go "nyah, nyah, nyah" at people who weren't nice to you in high school or
(2) there are likely to be people there whom you really would like to see again, catch up on, etc.

I was able to go only to my 25th, so far, and I had a fabulous time. I've really regretted not getting to the others (my high school is in Calif.), and hope, hell or high water, to get to the--urk, gleep--40th in 2005.

I hated school but I loved my social group (mostly band and glee club) in high school. I had soooo much fun seeing people again, many for the first time since we graduated.

Sure! I went to my 20th and the 25th is next year. It was fun seeing how various friends and enemies turned out. Comparing lives and just having a good time. It was fun. Plus you have a very cool life, and you can dance :)

This is totally irrelevant, but I wanted to thank you for posting your novel writing process on LJ. I read your entire journal yesterday (er, not stalker-type person, really!) and it gave me enormous insight into how other writers worked.

Though I haven't earned the right to the title of 'writer.' But that's neither here nor there.

I've read both your books and found them lyrical and beautiful. I'm not good critic so I won't even try but I enjoyed them and loved them and read both (go me) in one sitting. Thank you for sharing both your writing and your writing processes. =)
