I just joined a team on SparkPeople for women in the martial arts. I posted a picture of Delia doing one of her crazy kicks, and someone sent me to YouTube to view this video of Chloe Bruce, suggesting that Delia might be able to do the Scorpion kick that Ms. Bruce demonstrates in this very short video here:

So, Delia tried it. And the thing is, she can actually almost do it. She's really about 90% there. She just needs to open her hip just slightly more so that her leg is on a straight up-and-down axis, and she needs to maintain her balance. Still, she thinks that if she works at it, she'll have a real surprise for sensei soon, maybe a month or two.

Wow. That is freaky-looking -- and totally cool. When Delia gets it down, you must post a video! (Or at least a few stills.)

bizarre. somehow, on my friends list, that's three and a half minutes of a stubbly guy in black and white singing something emo.

on your page to comment, it's a freaky looking kick. much cooler. :)

I wonder if you do the same kins of hip openers in martial arts that we do in yoga. The position of her legs and pelvis look very familiar.

[livejournal.com profile] aome reported something similar. Guess the LJ/YouTube interface is being wonky.

I can't believe that humans can move like that. o_o

(I feel old and brittle.)

Impressive flexibility. I'm not sure that I see how that could be useful in combat though.

You're right. Not much good in combat.

It just looks damn cool.

LOL! That's what I was thinking. I can't see how you can really kick anything that way, but it's way impressive.

Peg, I'm blown away that Delia can almost do it already! I think it's a brilliant idea for her to practise it in secret and then show her sensei when she gets it down. I agree with [livejournal.com profile] nmsunbear, please post videos or photos! :D

I could see it being sort of useful in a choreography way-- the Daycare Ninja defends her charges while one of them clings to her front leg or something. But yeah, mostly for the looking cool.
I am contemplating my hips with great disappointment. Some of my aikido people call me flexible, and I have to laugh.
