Fiona is running around the house squeeing with excitement. She and her partner Corwin are finalists in Regional and are going on to State competition in National History Day.

The title of their presentation is:

"Fille Publique; Rights of the Morally Loose," which is about the registration of prostitutes in Paris in the 19th century.

!!!

They competed in the category "Presentation - Senior," (meaning high school students: instead of simply creating a board about their historical topic, they wrote and acted out a skit.) The name of Fiona's character was "Alexandre Jean-Baptiste Parent Duchâtelet," which gave her immense trouble, because she kept trying to pronounce it with a Spanish instead of French accent. Fiona reports: "He was a public researcher who obsessed with public health and sewers. He researched for eight years, wrote his book and died." I have not seen the presentation, but they plan to tear it up and rewrite it in preparation for State, as well as re-do the costumes.

Anyway, hurray for Fiona and Corwin. This is the second year in a row Fiona has gone to State (last year's presentation was on the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire).
