By coincidence, last night I was read in one of the Consumer Reports publications about negotiating. They recommend trying to negotiate absolutely everything, including medical bills. Now, it's maybe a complication that you've already made the agreement, but it couldn't hurt to talk to the dentist; explain the situation and then maybe try something like, Is there any way we can cut the costs on this without harming the result? COuldn't hurt.
I called the orthodontist's office, and they assured me that they will work with us to stretch out the payments. I'll know the full details when the office manager gets back in on Tuesday, but it looks as though they are willing to be flexible. So that's good news.
Great! Going through the collection process means they collect less money, plus lose goodwill, so I think a lot of professionals are willing to be very flexible as long as people keep in communication and regularly pay something. And right now, everyone but the very rich knows that the economy sucks.
