1040 electronic filing just started up, I'm at work. Heck, I was working yesterday. Does anyone (besides government/school employees) actually get today off to go do anything?
We'll do our share through the year, but not today.
Taking preliminary steps (and blogging about) my new service project. I'm working with a small team of volunteers to organize a <http://www.learnapaloozadc.com>Learnapalooza festival in NYC this summer.
There's a small team of people who will begin the planning in early April. Can I snag your contact info and contact you once we have some solid information? (We can connect less publicly via gmail, if you like -- my handle's expetesso.)
Well, *right now* there is a baited kitty trap attempting to catch one of the new strays outdoors. Not sure if that counts or not, but since I will then be looking after a wild cat for several days until it recovers from altering ... I'll certainly be *serving*. Just, not, you know people.
There's a food drive at work I'm planning to participate in as well.
I'm going to post in my LJ asking people to donate to the Carl Brandon Society's Octavia E. Butler Memorial Scholarship Fund (http://www.carlbrandon.org/butlerscholarship/index.html).
I'm going to try to get caught up on my ongoing volunteer work for the Clarion West writers' workshop (http://www.clarionwest.org/), and urge writers who are ready for the workshop to apply before March 1 (before February 1 to get a discount of $100 on tuition).
This morning, when the radio mentioned the national day of service, I thought about your continuing quest to make things suck less, and I grinned.
Probably 90% of the people in my building have the day off. The business is officially closed except for 'essential services' - basically, this means everyone except the bottom-level support staff people has the day off. There are eight people on-site for IT today (out of at least a couple of hundred), and a bunch more on-call.
I gathering up a bunch of old clothes and old housewares stuff that we got replaced with wedding presents and giving it to goodwill. However, I think they are getting sent with Dan, because I think I might have Strep throat. Infecting others is probably not a good way to spend the day of service. :(
Working, like too many people. After work, I'll probably go home and join the ACLU, because I'm certainly not going to be awake enough to do anything else to decrease worldsuck.
I live in England. But I figure 17 years of teaching high school in Colorado and nine years of teaching secondary school and sixth-form college here in England should count for some sort of service to society. ;)
I live out in the country without a driver's license, so today I simply went out for some driving instruction, drove to a town I've never driven before, and drove on a roundabout. Driving test is January 29th, and hopefully I can pass it so I can actually get out to towns where I can volunteer.
Working :(. But I'm putting on an event for kids in my bookstore, with activities in honor of MLK, and handing out copies of the I Have A Dream speech.

But, like many, I work a full day today.
