President Obama and Vice President Biden just officially announced the creation of a White House Task Force on Middle Class Working Families that will be chaired by the vice president. Biden wrote an op-ed piece in this morning's USA TODAY about why they're launching the task force. Here's the task force's website.

It's really something to have a President who gives a damn about people like me and who wants to help solve our problems.

Saying and doing are to different things. I read it and it's standard Washington stuff. They'll spend lots of time and money "investigating" and putting out reports. Surprisingly, they will discover people want jobs and need education to get them. A recommendation will be made for more money for colleges and training people who were just laid off. And pretty much nothing will be done.

I'm tired of sending out a resume and either getting no response at all or a form letter bounced back almost immediately saying "You don't meet any of the qualifications" after I outlined my qualifications that match to their requirements in my cover letter.

I'm tired of perky 20-somethings asking if I thought about going back to school, to which I reply - "What do you suggest I study to enhance my MS in Computer Science?" It's pretty clear they think I dropped out of high school to have kids. I get a blank look and told times are tough in the tech industry, look at all the layoffs.

The same tech industry where the mantra is, "There are no computer people in the US, so we must import guest workers."

I've had ONE interview since I was laid off years ago. It was pretty clear from the beginning of the interview that I wasn't even going to be considered and the only reason I was there was because the person leaving had recommended me. The interviewer was amazed that over 100 people had applied for one position.

I'm guessing that the over 50 crowd is going to be shut out as usual in favor of the college and 20-somethings. Currently, the over-50 job market is limited pretty much to retail or answering phones.
