Peg, I can't recall whether you're interested in unsolicited Decrease Worldsuck ideas, but in case you are here's one I just ran across: WhiteKnot.org will provide a simple tangible symbol of the fight for marriage equality - a white knot - for free, if you mail them a self-addressed stamped envelope. They'll also sell you a kit that contains material for 300 knots for $25.

Tae kwon do black belt testing is on the 21st, around 7:30-8am. We have a playdate scheduled for 10am at our house, but I'm sorely tempted to go watch at least the beginning of the test - I imagine it's really something to see.

For TKD, I think somewhere around the 5th degree (not sure when), the black belt earns the right to be called "Master X" instead of "Instructor X". Is there a title change for higher black belt ranks in karate?

The only ones addressed as Master that we have are the two co-owners of National Degree, who are ninth degree. They've been studying for fifty years. I don't know if they achieve that distinction at seventh or eighth degree though.
